Job Overview

As a Technical Writer at VRChat, you will be responsible for writing and documenting changes within the VRChat application for the end user. This will often require meeting with engineers, designers, and producers to figure out what changes are being made, how they will impact VRChat users, and how they will interact with other VRChat systems. You will work closely with our Communications and Production teams to ensure that changes to VRChat are being communicated to the community clearly, and that both casual and power users have the resources they need to navigate VRChat.

Job & Team Impact

VRChat is a complicated application with many moving parts. Likewise, our community is essentially part of our development team, as their ability to deftly produce content for our platform is vital to our success. Because of this, it’s vital that – as a team – we are providing both our regular users and our power users with clear, concise information on how VRChat works. As a Technical Writer, you will have a major hand in deciding how we share documentation, updates, and craft messaging to better inform our community.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain user-facing documentation
  • Write and edit blog posts, release notes, developer updates, and other user-facing articles
  • Interface with engineers to figure out what changes are being made and who they will impact
  • Constantly work to improve our documentation, working with various teams to make it clearer, more concise, and more effective
  • Assist other developers when copy is needed in-app
  • Work with the Communications team to iterate on strategy

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in a technical writing role
  • Past experience working in a game development or live-service environment 
  • Proficiency with multiple CMS platforms
  • Fantastic writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interview others and pull out key concepts quickly
  • Ability to boil down complex, technical concepts for non-technical and technical audiences
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Self motivated and driven
  • A strong portfolio of work either across multiple industries, or within the VR industry

Bonus Points

  • Degree in English, communications, or technical writing. Technical degrees are also advantageous, provided you also have a writing background!
  • Experience creating content in VRChat
  • Experience using or working with other VR platforms
  • Experience as a writer in other fields (marketing, journalism, etc.) is excellent
