Product Designer at Evil Martians

  • Design
  • Fulltime
  • Anywhere (100% Remote) Only
Job Description

Evil Martians is looking for a remote Product Designer. Please note, the salary listed is gross (before tax deductions).

We’re a product development consultancy with a focus on developer tool startups. Our clients range from Series A/B global startups and Y Combinator alumni to large internet companies and enterprises launching spin-offs. Evil Martians is an international company headquartered in New York with a fully remote, distributed team that’s been working remotely for over 15 years.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience designing complex, professional UIs. Since we specialize in developer tools and professional interfaces, we’ll ask you to showcase at least two non-consumer products you’ve worked on as a product designer.
  • Broad knowledge of UX patterns.
  • A sharp eye for aesthetics. This is the standard of UI work we expect.
  • Excellent communication skills when collaborating with both clients and developers.
  • Ability to take full ownership of the product and work independently, managing your time and tasks asynchronously, without relying on a backlog.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with analytics—formulating product hypotheses, setting metrics, and analyzing user behavior to measure outcomes.
  • Engineering skills. While coding expertise is a big plus, even basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would be a bonus. Most Martians, including founders, managers, and designers, can code.
  • In-depth understanding of AI, beyond just using it.
  • Data visualization skills, and familiarity with Edward Tufte’s work.
  • Interest in the startup world, with an MVP mindset. Experience launching your own products is a bonus.

Why join Evil Martians?

  • Remote-first culture: We’ve been fully remote for over 15 years, mastering distributed, async-first collaboration without micromanagement.
  • Radical transparency: Our finances are open to all employees. We discuss critical business decisions collectively, and every team member has a voice in the decision-making process.
  • Professional growth: We’ll help you grow your voice and skills by supporting you in giving talks at conferences, writing articles for our blog (often featured in top newsletters or on Hacker News), and more.
  • Revenue-sharing model: Every year, we share a portion of the company’s profits with employees.
  • Relocation assistance: We can help you relocate to Lisbon, Portugal.
  • Other benefits: Medical insurance, English courses, reimbursements for hardware, educational programs, and materials.

You’ll be joining a design team that has created several open-source tools, including the OKLCH Color Picker, the Martian Mono typeface, the accessible UI color palette Harmony, and the Figma plugin Polychrom. We believe we’ve built an inspiring environment for anyone looking to take their skills to the next level.

How to apply:

Please send an email to obey-design@evilmartians.com with your name and the subject line “Product Designer.”

In your email:

  • Tell us about at least two professional UIs you’ve worked on. Briefly describe the initial task, how you approached it, and what you created as a result—explaining why you believed it was the best solution. Include links or attach PNGs to showcase your designs.
  • Tell us about yourself and your journey as a product designer.

What happens next?

  1. We’ll review your application and ask a few follow-up questions.
  2. We’ll arrange a Zoom interview (#1).
  3. (Optional) You may be given a take-home test, which should take 1-2 hours. Typically, we ask candidates to design a part of a typical filtering interface, to evaluate your UX and UI skills.
  4. (Optional) We’ll ask questions about your take-home test results.
  5. Finally, we’ll arrange a Zoom interview (#2) with the CEO of Evil Martians.
