As a Mechanical Product Design Engineer, you will be tasked with designing our products and taking them to market. You are well versed in plastics and metal fabrication for electronics packaging. You thrive on designing for cost and manufacturing. Most importantly, you have a keen eye and a well developed skill for ergonomic/aesthetic design (portfolios required).

You understand that form can follow function and vice versa. You do not design boring products and you make sure everything you develop turns heads. Thermal analysis, PCBA layout review, metal fabrication, plastics fabrication, and everything in between are second nature to you.

Additionally, you will have years of experience in reliability and compliance testing, are comfortable working directly with vendors and suppliers, and can also develop manufacturing processes for the products you design.

In this role you will:

  • Develop electro-mechanical parts using SolidWorks and SolidWorks simulation tools.
  • Use your CAD surfacing skills to create organic shapes that can be fabricatedUse your keen eye for detail in ergonomic, aesthetic, and mechanical product design.
  • Understand that high powered, small form factor devices require excellent thermal management and you will lead the charge on that.
  • Organize design reviews as needed and develop relationships with team members to deliver ideal solutions.
  • Understand that Design for Manufacturing is not just a slogan, but the way we achieve cost effective products.
  • Understand that Design for Assembly is also not a slogan, but that good products have to have the ability to be efficiently assembled and manufactured.
  • Develop and drive detailed product schedules to achieve key milestones and deadlinesBe responsible for mechanicals costs and remain within budget.
  • Uphold our top-notch product quality & reliability expectations.
  • Design and plan for product availability at volume including helping author build guides and SOPs.
  • Consider product requirements and customer experience at every stage of development

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer and Industrial DesignerBS/MS in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Proven experience in manufacturing and product development.
  • Experience with a variety of 3D printed materials and model making capabilities (painting and prepping of prototype parts).
  • Proven track record of exceptional Industrial Design.
  • Brought multiple complex electronic devices from inception to mass production.
  • Exposure to product development cycles such as Proto > EVT > DVT > PVT > MP.
  • Excellent design presentation skills and the ability to talk to a varied audience.
  • Ability to think strategically and broadly to comprehend, communicate, and drive complex design trade-offs.
  • Willingness and ability to appropriately say ‘no’ to features when necessary to meet other higher priority program objectives.
  • First hand experience working with off-shore manufacturers and traveling to manufacturing sites as needed; prior experience working with OEM/CM.
  • Willingness to travel domestically to Syracuse, NY with regularity, and other sites as needed.

The icing on the cake:

  • Ability to educate other staff on why the designs are the way they are.
  • Strong familiarity with communication and documentation tools like Slack, Notion, Confluence and Jira as well as expertise utilizing Google Slides and / or Apple Keynote.
  • Experience with compliance labs certifying for FCC, CE, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Experience building and certifying devices with RF transmitters (e.g. Bluetooth, WiFi, Cellular)
