We are an online-education company that teaches our students how to sell books and audiobooks on Amazon and Audible. Our goal is to be the one-stop shop for everything publishing related. This year we are making massive strides towards achieving this goal by launching our own software, Publishing.ai. The Head of Product Engineering is responsible for overseeing the success of Publishing.ai and building our software team.

About the role:

We are seeking an energizing & experienced leader to act as the head of our coaching department. This individual will lead, manage, and hold accountable our customer-facing coaches and supervisors.

You will ensure that we are delivering exceptional customer experiences, maximizing our student’s success, and providing proactive and professional coaching from start to finish.

You'll need a blend of sales acumen, technological proficiency, and inspiring leadership to motivate your team towards achieving & exceeding their goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop, define, and oversee the company's technical strategy to align with business goals and product roadmap, identifying both long-term objectives and immediate "low-hanging fruit."
  • Building the Software: Executing on the roadmap and ensuring features are released on time.
  • Proactive Alignment with Future Roadmap Destinations: Make strategic decisions that not only address immediate needs but also preemptively align with future goals and destinations within the product roadmap.
  • Identify Blind Spots & Opportunities: Recognize and address potential obstacles, risks or shortcomings in the current strategy, aiding senior management in making informed decisions. Also identifying potential opportunities for growth.
  • Architecture Design: Lead the design and implementation of scalable and robust systems that will meet the product's requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Coordinate with various teams within the organization, including product management, data science, and engineering to ensure alignment and effective execution.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and oversee quality assurance processes, ensuring that the product meets the desired quality standards and performance management.
  • Vendor Management: Select and manage third-party API vendors, ensuring that their contributions align with the company's strategic goals.
  • Mentoring and Team Development: Lead and nurture the engineering team, emphasizing growth, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Machine Learning/AI: Evaluate and define the technical resources required for in-house Machine Learning/AI capabilities. Additionally, staying updated with advancements in the AI and tech industry, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of innovation and regulations.

Requirements for this role:

  • Strong hands-on experience in AI/ML (specifically in NLU space, ideally using LLMs), with a proven record of training, deploying, and using 1P/3P models in production.
  • Strong product experience - specifically from product inception to “go to market” and beyond.
  • Extensive experience in software development, system architecture, and data management.
  • Experience building software teams from the ground up, including hiring and training of engineers and adjacent roles, setting up processes and documentation, etc.
  • Demonstrable ability to function both as an individual contributor and a manager in past roles.
  • Aptitude for rapidly switching between different roles and tasks, adapting to the startup's evolving needs.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Bachelors, Master, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, bonus points for specializing in AI/ML.
  • Experience with our current tech stack: Node.js, SQL, Typescript, GraphQL.

Deliverables:

  • Develop a comprehensive organizational structure for the software team that aligns with our 3-year vision.
  • Define the product roadmap for the next year and then setting quarterly milestones so we can move towards our 3-year vision.
  • Development of department-level KPIs to drive innovation, efficiency, accuracy and productivity.
  • Build & run our technical recruiting process and define career paths for engineering roles.
  • Transition our machine learning capabilities in-house to ensure outstanding and consistent quality by the end of 2023.
  • Execute efficient sprint planning processes that ensure timely deliveries, aligning with our ambitious product roadmap schedule.
  • Drive the development of a compelling software solution that ensures customer retention, resulting in reduced monthly churn rates.
  • Lead architecting and implementing our end-to-end Continuous Integration and Deployment pipelines, to ensure the quality of our software and underlying models.
  • Architect and lead development of RLHF and Human-in-the-loop solutions to maintain quality, consistency, and integrity of generative models by the end of 2023.
  • Act as an inspirational leader who consistently motivates the team, ensuring they remain engaged and consistently achieve their set milestones.
  • Minimizing tech debt by architecting a robust and scalable technology infrastructure to support our expanding needs.
  • Be versatile by assuming varied roles, both in leadership and hands-on execution, depending on the team’s requirements.
