Senior Backend Engineer – Adaptive Telemetry at Grafana Labs
- Programming
- Fulltime
- Anywhere (100% Remote) Only
Job Description
Title: Senior Backend Engineer – Adaptive Telemetry (Remote, USA)
Location: United States (Remote)
Job Description:
This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the Eastern timezone of the USA
What is Grafana Cloud?
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.
The Databases department owns and operates the telemetry databases that are Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles. We offer our databases as a Cloud service supporting Grafana Cloud, and additionally as on-premise solutions with Grafana Enterprise Metrics, Grafana Enterprise Logs, and Grafana Enterprise Traces. They are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented in Go and running on Kubernetes across all major Cloud service providers (GCP, Azure, AWS).
Adaptive Telemetry Group
The Adaptive Telemetry group, part of the Databases department, has the mission of ensuring that all telemetry stored in our databases is worthy of attention. The group has already developed Adaptive Metrics and Adaptive Logs and is now in the path of iterating them while expanding the same vision to other telemetry signals These services operate at a large scale and performance is key to keeping the offering competitive and running smoothly.
An Adaptive Telemetry engineer has various work streams. They likely are engaged in a larger project with another engineer, as well as mixing in some performance and reliability improvements discovered through operating the system in production. They are also responsible for writing and reviewing PRs and design documents from other engineers in the squad, shepherding automated release rollouts, and participating in the on-call rotation for their systems.
As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software. Our tech stack is mostly made up of services written in Go, running on multiple Kubernetes clusters that leverage Cloud object storage.
What will you be doing?
- Take an active role in influencing our roadmap and your own career objectives.
- Work with your team to deliver new features, then use the results to iterate and improve.
- Drive projects from initial ideation all the way to operations once it is in the hands of customers.
- Contribute to other projects that may not directly fall within your team’s scope.
- Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning the reliability, performance, and availability.
- Be a part of your team’s follow-the-sun on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you’re running.
- Mentor and support other team members, participate in design discussions and collaborate with the team.
- Learn new skills by gaining a deeper understanding of our cloud product and our customers and getting to know the codebase of a large distributed system.
As we are remote-first and our engineering organization is largely remote, we provide guidance and meet regularly using video calls, so an independent attitude and good communication skills are a must.
What are we looking for in you?
You are a motivated self starter with a bias towards action. You are customer focused. We build everything with our users in mind. You have a passion for creating intuitive products that fit customers’ needs
- Pragmatism: You are able to take on complex challenges and break them down to achieve short feedback loops: to analyze, design, and build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather data and feedback and then progress iteratively
- Collaboration and communication: The smallest unit we have is a squad. You’ll be working with your teammates in a fully remote setup. Good communication skills are a must
Nice to haves:
- Experience working with Kubernetes
- Experience working with Kafka
- Been a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call for your team at a previous employer or just using these tools on hobby/homelab projects)
- Familiarity with being on-call and performing operations/SRE tasks or with the concept of infrastructure as code
In the USA, the Base compensation range for this role is $148,000 – $178,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonus (if applicable) and other benefits listed here.
*Compensation ranges are country-specific. If you are applying for this role from a different location than listed above, your recruiter will discuss your specific market’s defined pay range & benefits at the beginning of the process.
About Grafana Labs: There are more than 20M users of Grafana, the open source visualization tool, around the globe, monitoring everything from beehives to climate change in the Alps. The instantly recognizable dashboards have been spotted everywhere from a NASA launch and Minecraft HQ to Wimbledon and the Tour de France. Grafana Labs also helps more than 3,000 companies — including Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase, and eBay — manage their observability strategies with the Grafana LGTM Stack, which can be run fully managed with Grafana Cloud or self-managed with the Grafana Enterprise Stack, both featuring scalable metrics (Grafana Mimir), logs (Grafana Loki), and traces (Grafana Tempo).

Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the organization
Stripe’s Payments and Risk organizations are at the heart of Stripe’s business. They are responsible for enabling our users to accept payments worldwide, in a secure and reliable fashion.
You may work on a wide variety of critical business areas including:
- Payins: The Payins organization oversees the fundamental primitives of collecting payments across the Stripe ecosystem. Custodians of mission-critical foundations, and stewards of essential administrative payment workflows, merchants rely on us to innovate on the fundamentals. We act as catalysts towards realizing Stripe’s flexible and extensible multi-product platform.
- Optimized Checkout & Link: The Optimized Checkout and Link teams focus on building best-in-class checkout experiences that provide delightful checkout experiences for customers, while driving higher purchase conversion for merchants. As an organization, we work on Checkout, Payment Links, Elements, Payment Methods, and Link – each playing a crucial part in augmenting the economic landscape of the internet.
Within this organization, we are looking for frontend engineers across a few different areas:
- Product: You’ll join a payments team building high-quality UIs for merchants’ checkout pages or the Stripe Dashboard working with experienced frontend and full-stack engineers to deliver world-class checkout experiences. You’ll work with engineers, product managers, designers, and stakeholders across the organization to build new features and products across Elements, Checkout, and Link.
- Frontend Platform: As a platform engineer you will be building tools and systems to enable a 100+ engineering organization to deliver delightful frontend features for millions of Stripe merchants. Our team places a heavy emphasis on being domain experts on how to develop reliably and safely for the web platform at a very high scale.

This is a new, exciting area of focus for our organization, and we are looking for frontend engineers with growth or experimentation expertise to help us deliver more experiments than we’ve ever run before, and help us improve our foundations. You’ll work closely with data science, product managers, and designers to create, build, and execute buyer experiments efficiently.
As a frontend engineer at Stripe, you’ll join fast-moving teams building consumer-focused UIs and full-stack products. You’ll work with experienced engineers, product, design, and data science to conceive of and deliver world-class solutions to end-users problems.
Responsibilities
- Work with a wide range of systems, processes, and technologies to own and solve problems from end-to-end.
- Build elegant APIs and user experiences that enable merchants to run and scale their businesses on top of Stripe.
- Craft new products and features that impact millions of people and businesses around the world such as building the fastest and most seamless checkout flow.
- Explore creative opportunities for next-gen payments experiences that leverage the depth of Stripe’s payment technology.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization such as product, design, infrastructure, marketing and operations.
- Develop and execute against both short- and long-term roadmaps. Make effective tradeoffs that consider business priorities, user experience, and a sustainable technical foundation.
- Uphold our high engineering standards and bring consistency to the many codebases and processes you will encounter.
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
- 2+ years of software development experience, with an emphasis on modern frontend technologies (HTML/CSS/TypeScript/React) and building delightful user interfaces.
- Comfort operating as a frontend developer and owning projects end-to-end.
- Are motivated by solving hard problems, and measure your success in terms of impact doing so.
- Thrive in a highly collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts.
- Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different areas of expertise.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working in high-growth teams similar to Stripe.
- Experience building financial systems or tools for financial experts.
Hybrid work at Stripe
This role is available either in an office or a remote location (typically, 35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).
Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.
A remote location, in most cases, is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently or plan to live.
Pay and benefits
The annual US base salary range for this role is $150,500 – $269,200. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings (“OTE”) range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.

This team is a part of Backstage’s larger product and engineering department, which numbers approximately thirty high-performance engineers, designers, product managers, analysts, and quality assurance resources. We value curiosity, trust, and impact, and we foster a culture of constant learning and improvement where teammates work together to accomplish user-focused initiatives.
Our process is a modified Kanban process with the goal of delivering incremental value to the customer. Products are workshopped and then broken into milestones, with estimates driven by engineers, not managers. We uphold autonomy and trust our engineers to pick the best tools suited for their tasks, while working collaboratively towards mutual goals. In line with our goal to continue delivering value to the customer, we release multiple times a day, every day, and adhere to a robust QA and code review process before any code is released.
As a Senior Frontend Engineer, you will be working with cutting edge technology and new product development in a stable and rapidly growing company. This is an individual contributor role, and you will be empowered to make your own decisions about implementations and given autonomy to complete your work at your own pace.
The Senior Frontend Engineer will report to the Frontend Director of Engineering
What You’ll Do:
- Partner with product, marketing, business intelligence, and design teams to create beautiful, usable interfaces for desktop and mobile web
- Design engineering plans to meet the requirements of the product or goal
- Leverage a modern tech stack, including TypeScript and React, to build complex web applications
- Contribute to and influence the overall frontend architecture decisions
- Work closely with product, marketing, and customer service to translate customer feedback into successful features and tools
- Collaborate with front-end engineers outside your feature team to maintain shared code and front-end infrastructure
- Coordinate with back-end engineers to provide a cohesive experience
What we’re looking for from you:
- Proven experience building a major product or feature from scratch at scale for a large public-facing web application
- Advanced proficiency with Typescript and React
- Proficient with CSS. Experience with TailwindCSS is a plus.
- Deep understanding of various state management and data fetching approaches in the React ecosystem.
- Knowledgeable of the trade-offs of different rendering techniques (server-side-rendering, static-site-generation, client-side rendering)
- Familiarity with common front-end build tools such as Webpack and Vite
- Experience incrementally rolling out new features, components or refactors without blocking the rest of the team, and iterating upon and maintaining live products
- Strong project management skills; able to organize, adhere to process, and execute projects across disciplines and by deadline
- Excellent communication skills; you can articulate clearly, thoroughly, and concisely to technical and non-technical audiences
- Comfortability with the entire development life cycle (inception to release) in an Agile environment
- Collaborative, engaged, and adaptable; you are comfortable joining a team with a large, mature codebase with established engineering processes
- Flexible and proactive, you’re able to shift gears quickly in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with Python and/or Django a plus
